Obviously, you need text on a web page. Having a page that is constructed purely in flash, java-script or of images is next to worthless.

Google has been reported as no longer considering this tag but tests have proven other major search engines still do. It has also been proven that for very niche key phrases, pages that only feature a keyword in the meta keyword tag get featured within results.
